The Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission
We serve Elkins residents and city government by providing planning and technical assistance for the identification, certification and preservation of Elkins’ historic sites. We are chartered in the City Code based on Article 26a of the West Virginia State Code. Our commission includes five volunteer members who are appointed by the Mayor of Elkins.
EHLC works actively to enhance and promote the heritage assets of our area. We meet every month at the historic Darden House and we network with volunteers, other community organizations, and the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). We also serve as the City's Certified Local Government (CLG) agency, helping Elkins qualify for a select category of grant programs.
EHLC has won several grants and brought technical assistance and national recognition for Elkins' historic sites -- including the downtown Historic District, the Davis & Elkins College Historic District, and the Wees Historic District.

To serve the City of Elkins by providing local leadership, education, governance and advocacy to preserve our historic places and revitalize our community.

• To create a culture of preservation within our community.
• To Function as an integral part of Elkins City Government and a respected partner in all matters related to preservation and planning for historic structures and districts.
How to find us
EHLC keeps an office in the historic Darden House, which it also maintains and leases to other community groups. We meet the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Darden House, downtown, on Davis Avenue, next to City Hall. All meetings are open to the public.

Duties, powers and authority:

Survey and designate historic sites which are of local, regional, statewide or national significance

Document, certify and recognize such buildings;
establish standards for the care and management of certified landmarks

Acquire and administer landmarks and easements that insure preservation
|
Establish historic districts
|
Encourage local preservation through city and county government

Prepare historical markers

Coordinate preservation programs

Fundraising

Adopt operating procedures

Employ consultants and others who can help fulfill its mission
